A year passed, and there had been many changes to the forest since then.
For one thing, the creature hadn’t shown itself since. There was a rumor that it froze to death in the cold, harsh winter.
The forest gradually became more accustomed to a gentle rule, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Violet didn’t think she would make a good ruler, but once she tried it out, it seemed to suit her.
A friend once told her, “It is sometimes the humblest person who makes the best leader.”
She thought of her father.

After the confrontation with the giant bat, the owls went back to the place where Violet saw a bloody, feathered body.

“Aurora…” Violet reached out. Her body was still partially covered by shadow. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t save you…”
The forest stayed silent. Violet looked at her sister.
It wasn’t fair. She’d gotten to know so little about her…
“Th- that’s okay…” the pile of feathers on the ground twitched.
“Aurora! You’re alive?”
She smiled slightly. “Violet…”

The creature watched the Lavenderwings move slowly toward their roost. That’s it… he thought. Go home to sleep. Things will be taken care of quickly, and then I can move on to the Silverwing colony…
